Week 1 – Serve

“I’ve had opportunities that God’s used as forms of healing in my life. Being able to help with the SHIFT class has been huge because it’s been really great for me to be able to share my story with them too, just to be able to tell these kids that I was in their spot and in their place when I was 8 years old. I know exactly what it feels like to be going through something like that as a child.”

Hebrews 6:10-12

10 For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do. 11 Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true.12 Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance.

Commentary

– Read together –

Serving the Body of Christ is one way we respond in delight for the saving work of Christ’s death and resurrection. By loving others, we love Jesus. By serving His people, we serve Him. By ministering to the least of these, we minister to the One who is greatest. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we lay down our lives for others with our energy, time, resources, talents, and spiritual gifts. Paul, in Ephesians, provides a window into the mysterious riches and beauty in serving in the Body of Christ. “God’s purpose in all this was to use the Church to display His wisdom in its rich variety to all the unseen rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was His eternal plan, which He carried out through Christ Jesus our Lord.” (3:10-11). Serving God’s people creates a compelling picture for the power of the Church and our hope is that you will jump in and create this masterpiece alongside us. There are always needs in familiar places (like Children’s Ministry and Campus Impact) but also in less familiar venues like wrap-around families for Project Hope or hosting a Kairos intern in your home next summer.
