Though the New Testament gives no indication of the exact location of the site of the Sermon on the Mount the Byzantines built a church to commemorate Jesus’ sermon. The current Catholic chapel was built in 1939.

Pope John Paul II visited the modern octagonal church at the site in 2000.

Matthew 5-7 One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them.
