Historical Significance
  • Mount Carmel is a 13 mile long wood mountain range, projecting into the Mediterranean Sea at Haifa
  • Home of altars to strange gods, particularly, a sanctuary for the worship of Baal (title meaning “Lord” in Northwest Semitic languages)
Biblical Significance
  • Song of Songs 7:5: Solomon compared the majesty of his bride’s head to the summit of Carmel:
  • 1 Kings 18:19-40: Elijah had his contest with the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel and it is where Elijah killed the prophets of Baal (more specifically, at the Kishon Brook)
  • Isaiah 35:2: Isaiah used Mt. Carmel as a symbol of beauty, fruitfulness, majesty, and glory
  • Isaiah 33:9/Amos 1:2/ Nahum: When Carmel is referred to as languishing and withering, it indicates God’s judgment on His land
